XXXX While, as of writing this article, our formal rollout is pending, I can share my experiences and observations associated with our pilot group testing. Lifting the Fog We had relied on a manual system heavily to catalog and keep track of our collection. Our law library materials had sign-out cards in the back of the books. We handwrote the title and call number on these cards, and wrote the call number on sticker labels for the spine. We also created a Word document that contained the call number, title, location and table of contents for each resource. This document was then placed in our department's document management system (DMS). Having the law library catalog reside in the department's DMS proved to be quite challenging as we relied on the default search that came with the program, which was not very powerful or user-friendly. Another downside was that library materials were in a completely separate database from the departmental database, so searching would not produce the desired results. Further complicating matters was the fact that the law department had used a previous DMS and not all library documents made it through the data migration; and if they did, they were sometimes corrupted. It seemed counterproductive and cumbersome to have a system in which the only people who understood it well were the librarians. The whole point of a catalog is to showcase to users what is available and accessible through a user-friendly interface. AALL/ILTA White Paper 87
