Time sure flies by when you're working in knowledge
management (KM). Case in point: Since our last ILTA KM
survey, two years have already passed. With the results now
in from this –– our fih –– survey, we have a decade of data
reflecting how KM has evolved in ILTA member organizations.
Conducted every two years since 2008, the survey is designed
to help legal KM professionals benchmark their organizations'
KM programs and keep current with emerging KM trends and
topics in the legal industry.
As in past years, we ensured one response per firm, asking
the person most directly responsible for or connected with KM
to complete the survey and consult with others to answer as
accurately as possible. We were pleased to receive 148 responses,
one more than in 2014 and double our 2012 responses.
Who Participated
Over the past decade, responses have come mainly from
law firms, and 2016 offered no surprise. As in 2014, 93% of
respondents were law firms. As for the size of organizations,
responses were again spread over all five categories, with firms
with 51 to 250 lawyers (25%) and 501 to 1000 lawyers (25%) being
most heavily represented. The upward trend in responses
from firms with fewer than 50 lawyers –– which rose from
3% in 2012 to an impressive 17% in 2014 –– did not hold in 2016,
with responses from smaller firms falling to slightly over 10%.
Once again, most respondents operate in one country (56%),
while international firms operating in six or more countries
decreased from 26 to 18%.
