30 WWW.ILTANET.ORG | ILTA WHITE PAPER POTPOURRI Risky Business: Life in Legal calendaring errors and case notification misses, so the question is why firms are not geing the green light to buy these technologies that protect the firm from malpractice exposure. Docketing/Calendaring Systems: A Risk Management Solution When asked if their firm has a centralized docketing/calendaring solution, the majority of respondents (60.66%) said yes. 34.42% said no, 21.31% because they have decentralized tools and 13.11% because they currently do not have a docketing solution. 4.92% did not know. To drill down into respondents' confidence in the docketing solutions they were using, the survey asked them to agree or disagree with the statement "My current docketing solution is built on the latest technology." 27.87% agreed, 32.79% disagreed, and 39.34% indicated they were uncertain. Adding together the "disagree" and "not sure" numbers produced a considerable 72.13% of respondents who were not confident their firm was using the most modern, updated docketing technology available. Analysis and Commentary Risk management is on the radar for legal IT professionals in a very visible way. Although the buck stops with general counsel –– particularly at large firms –– the CIO/CTO and IT staff are definitely charged with protecting the firm from risk daily, whether the threats are external cyberaacks or internal factors. Many respondents expressed concern about their ability to address and mitigate the risks their firms face, and less than half (46.67%) said they were authorized to make additional budget available for risk management purchases. The results of American LegalNet's ILTACON 2016 Risk Management Survey showed that law firms are feeling vulnerable, and their IT professionals are struggling to get the resources they need to protect their firms from threats like cyberaacks, lawyer and staff errors, and technology changes. As an informed community, we can make the business of law less risky. ILTA EREZ BUSTAN Erez Bustan is President and CEO of American LegalNet, Inc., which he founded in 1996.
