Risky Business: Life in Legal
Legal IT professionals have plenty to worry about from a risk
perspective, with threats coming from every direction. Cybersecurity
and hacking cases have recently wrought destruction and scandal
–– from the Panama Papers to the hacking of Democratic National
Convention communications. Though cybersecurity disasters grab
most of the headlines, law firm CIOs must guard against many risks,
both internal and external, to protect the business and their clients.
American LegalNet conducted its ILTACON 2016 Risk
Management Survey to benchmark the risks that worried ILTA
members most and how prepared their law firms were to mitigate
them. Following up on last year's inaugural survey, this year we wanted
to capture a snapshot of how law firms perceive and tackle risks
threatening their organizations.
Who Took the Survey?
2016 survey respondents represented firms of all sizes. 18.33% of
responders were from firms with over 500 aorneys, 45% from firms
with 101-500 aorneys and 36.67% from firms with 100 or fewer
aorneys. Compared with 2015, the 2016 results showed an uptick in
responses from CIOs and compliance personnel and a slight decrease
in responses from partners, executive directors and general counsel.
Respondents to the 2016 survey were predominantly legal IT, including
CIOs, CTOs and IT staff. Here is the full job title breakout:
