"Machine-learning algorithms are really kind of stupid. They
need so many examples to learn."
– John Martinis, Physicist,

This is an interesting statement considering the state of our
industry and the state of knowledge management (KM).
KM practitioners should step back from their respective
industries and look at the consumer realm. What is happening in the
world outside of where we get our paychecks? What KM tools are
people using every day? Let's explore some of the technologies behind
the companies shaping global consumer knowledge management.
Artificial Intelligence
Artificial intelligence (AI) is a game-changer for KM. A fascinating
example is how Google's AI recently beat the Go world champion.
Go is an abstract strategy game for two players; the primary aim is
to surround more territory than your opponent. One of the oldest board
games still played today –– dating back over 2,500 years to ancient China
–– the game is considered exponentially more complex than chess, with
millions of possible moves. The games rules are simple, but, as the saying
goes, it has more possible positions than there are atoms in the universe.
Because of the level of intuition required to play well, computers
had been presumed unable to play at a world-class level. Just last year,
experts estimated it would be 10 years before AI could take on Go. It
didn't take that long. This March, Google's DeepMind AI beat the world
champion an impressive four games to one. Elon Musk, head of Tesla,
SpaceX and Open AI, called this a new phase forward for AI.
But it has not been the only step forward.
