73 WWW.ILTANET.ORG The ILTA community is filled with avid readers. Here are some recent recommendations. MEMBER RESOURCES Whatcha Readin'? Start with Why: How Great Leaders Inspire Everyone to Take Action by Simon Sinek What do influential leaders –– like Martin Luther King, Jr., Steve Jobs and Bill Gates –– who led major change efforts have in common? They had a natural ability to start with "why" and share that with everyone in their spheres of influence. "Why are we doing this?" is a simple question many leaders forget to ask or understand. In challenging times, we might be called upon to lead or influence change; that effort will be greatly facilitated by our knowing "why" and being able to articulate that to those we are trying to influence. Sinek's book is a great place to start developing and understanding your "why." — Ed Hayes, Hunton & Williams LLP Me Before You by Jojo Moyes This story has been made into a movie that recently hit U.S. screens. It is a kind of love story between a caregiver and her wheelchair-bound patient. — Cynthia Mo, Smith Moore Leatherwood LLP Big Fat Surprise by Nina Teicholz How have U.S. dietary habits come to be? This book is well-researched and reveals it all. The food pyramid and the prevailing wisdom of a "balanced" diet that favors carbohydrates might not be as effective as we are led to believe. Get behind-the-scenes, detailed research and evidence in an easy-to-read style in this book that should be on top of everyone's reading list. — Stan Ong, Conyers Dill & Pearman Sprint: How to Solve Big Problems and Test New Ideas in Just Five Days by Jake Knapp, John Zeratsky and Braden Kowitz Whether you are redesigning your boring intranet home page or simply working within a team, this book gives you a straightforward and approachable way to test ideas. I highly recommend this to those who are new to the Agile methodology or are looking to move quickly through the design-build process — Luke Schnoebelen, Shook, Hardy & Bacon L.L.P. Part of the Family: Christadelphians, the Kindertransport, and Rescue from the Holocaust by Jason Hensley This book provides fascinating information on how many Jewish children were saved from the Holocaust by generous families in Britain. It is available on Amazon as a free eKindle book. — Maria Terrell, Lloyd Gosselink Rochelle & Townsend, P.C. Bold: How to Go Big, Create Wealth and Impact the World by Peter H. Diamandis Diamandis aims to energize readers to think with the mindset of an entrepreneur in whatever they are working on. He gives great insight into the vast resources available to anyone who wants to create wealth. Reading this book will help you clear your head, stop the tunnel vision and broaden your ideas. You'll be liberated to be creative. — Dora Tynes, Sheppard, Mullin, Richter & Hampton LLP In what city are you located? I spend workdays in Sunnyvale, CA at the new Google campus. But I still commute back to Los Angeles every weekend. What inspired you to enter ILTA's 2015 Distinguished Peer Awards? ILTA's Distinguished Peer Awards is one of the most prestigious industry awards in the legal technology field. The award recognizes innovative legal departments, and I believe Google Legal is a great example of a department that continuously fosters innovation through technology. I wanted to share what we learned and our best practices. And I wanted our legal technology team to receive the recognition it deserves from industry peers. What's your favorite travel destination? I'm a big fan of all-inclusive vacations in the Caribbean. Some people say that's very lazy of me, and I agree with them 100 percent! :-) What future-focused work are you excited about right now? I'm very excited about various applications of machine learning (ML) technologies to legal. Despite all the hype, ML will augment a lot of legal work in the next two to five years. How do you stay innovative? I'm lucky to work for a company where "innovation" is not just another corporate buzzword. At Google, we are not only allowed to innovate, we are expected to do it. I try to stay on top of new technologies (with varying degrees of success) and imagine how the new breakthroughs could apply to the legal technology space.
