inside ILTA INSIGHT 2012: You Had To Be There by Janet Day of Berwin Leighton Paisner and ILTA's INSIGHT Co-Chair We were excited to expand INSIGHT into a two-day format this year, which reached ILTA members in 13 countries across Europe, plus the Americas and Asia. Each day featured sessions focused on three major areas of interest, with the overarching theme of "Beyond the Traditional… Law Firm IT." Also new this year was a full exhibition hall featuring nearly 40 international legal technology service providers. The first day's keynote, Janet Williams, gave insight into one of the largest jobs on the planet. It is doubtful that anyone in the room was not awed by the range of her responsibilities — not the least of which is her responsibility for security at the London Olympics later this year. She drew a chuckle from the room with her reference to Smith & Wesson providing accessories for an attendee at the Royal Wedding last year, and a collective sigh from the room when she talked about the issue of identifying what is a dark alley in the Internet world. After the keynote, delegates attended sessions exploring efficiency and strategy, information management, and litigation and practice support. The ongoing BYOD debate continued in lively style in the "Ubiquitous Computing in the Post-PC Era" session. Doug Caddell, former CIO of Foley & Lardner and a leader in large firm BYOD deployment, moderated a panel who gave practical advice on managing the post-PC environment. After lunch, in a two-session block, speakers explored the ramifications of the Legal Services Act — from both a practitioner and a potential investor perspective — as well as alternate legal models. These sessions provided a look ahead at what may well be the law firm of the future. Also on day one, the litigation and practice support track focused on the tremendous technology innovation occurring in the management of litigation matters and how this will help shape the matter management techniques of the future. Technologies such as predictive coding, as well as the implications of offshoring, are trends of today that were tied together and debated in the track's final session on "Driving Innovation in Litigation: Can You Afford 116 Peer to Peer
