Sarah's documents might not be stored according to client security requirements, and no prompts will advise her not to share the documents with colleagues who should not see them due to ethical walls or other client confidentiality restrictions. As law firms continue to embrace bring your own device (BYOD) policies and lawyers increasingly adopt mobile devices, scenarios like this are a growing concern. Many firms set policies governing mobile device and application use but struggle to enforce them. In fact, cloud security leader CipherCloud distributed a 2014 report on cloud adoption and risk that asserts that 86 percent of cloud applications in use at global enterprises are unsanctioned. Effective mobile policy enforcement might not happen overnight, but with devices in lawyers' hands today, firms must act quickly to curtail information governance risks. They must provide mobile applications that adequately meet their lawyers' needs, or those lawyers will find alternatives that could be risky for the firm. The right application will balance ease of use, functionality and policy conformance, giving lawyers the tools they need to be productive on the go without putting the firm at risk. WHAT TO EVALUATE As firms evaluate mobile applications, they should consider three areas for concerns: How the application addresses information security requirements Whether the method of delivery creates risks or inefficiencies How the app marries simplicity of design with functionality Information Security: Cloud storage can present information security challenges.
