ILTA WHITE PAPER: MAY 2015 WWW.ILTANET.ORG TALK THE TALK TO GAIN PROFESSIONAL MOBILITY describing how they function and operate as a business. It is important to talk about future goals, objectives and measures of success, but all these are predicated on what the current state is of both the company and employee. Telling stories keeps the conversation grounded in reality. IT'S ALL ABOUT PREPARATION Legal technology professionals prepare for many what-if scenarios in the workplace, but rarely do they properly prepare for interviews. Here are some common false assumptions and ways to rethink your approach to the interview process before you talk to prospective employers: • Interviews are not just about researching the company online and asking your friends and colleagues what they know about the company. Interviews are about taking stock of your personal skills and experiences and rehearsing how to articulate those on an interview. • Interviews are not about what the company can do for you and your career; interviews are about understanding a company's needs and articulating the value you can add to improve their organization. As soon as you remove the notion that the interview process is about what a company can do for you and instead approach the job hunt from a perspective of what you can do for a company, then you will find the right fit for you and your career. If you cannot contribute to the growth and success of a company or department, you will likely find yourself looking for a new job in a short period of time. • Interviews are not an individual at their best impromptu self. Interviews are all about doing your preparation prior to arrival and delivering prepared content about yourself. An interview is a sales call. This last statement warrants deeper exploration and examination. The art of storytelling is one art form that can apply to deepening one's professional communication skills. So, too, is the art of sales. 35 Interviews are about taking stock of your personal skills and experiences and rehearsing how to articulate those on an interview.
