the quarterly magazine of ILTA 73 Peer to Peer inside IlTA Watch for ongoing updates to iltanet.org. Monkey Update! uSING PdA MOdE FOR E-GROuPS ILTA members consistently rate the ILTA E-Groups (message forums) as one of the best values of membership with ILTA. And in keeping with this issue's theme on mobile and wireless devices, we want to ensure our members are aware of the options available for accessing and subscribing to the ILTA E-Groups in PDA format. Let's look at the advantages and disadvantages of PDA format followed by how to configure it. At any time, you can subscribe to or change your existing E-Groups to be in PDA format versus the "Real Time" or "Daily Digest" mode. There are two primary benefits for using PDA format: • Messages will arrive in plain text format which is usually best suited for Pdas. • you can reply to a message using the normal "Reply" feature of your mobile device. As PDA capabilities continue to evolve and improve, the E-Groups PDA format will likely evolve, too; but at present, it is a very basic plain text message. Plain text is fast and simple, but when viewed in your regular e-mail client, it will certainly lack pizzazz compared to HTML e-mail messagess. If you want to send URLs in your message posts, a lengthy URL might get broken or truncated due to the inherent nature of SMTP plain text mode. When you reply to a post that was received in PDA format, your reply will go to the group. At the bottom of every posted message, links are also included so that members can use the Web interface for replying to the group or to just the sender. Active users should save the E-Group posting e-mail address in their contacts list or address book for quick reference when ready to post a new message. With this information in mind, you can decide if PDA format is right for you. To choose PDA format for your E-Groups, visit the site at http://egroups.iltanet.org and click the choice for "My Subscriptions" which can be found under the "E-Groups" menu heading. You will be prompted to login (unless you have selected the option for "remember my login"). When you arrive at the page of eligible E-Groups, you can choose the radio button for "PDA" versus "Real Time" or "Daily Digest" mode. After making your choices, click the "Save" button near the bottom of the page. FuTuRE ENhANCEMENTS Over the last several months, we have received some great member feedback on suggested improvements to the E-Groups, which we have passed along to the developer. We believe that much of your great feedback will make it into the next release of the software, which we anticipate seeing in the months ahead. Finally, we want to mention that you'll find many great handouts on the ILTA website for getting started with ILTA E-Groups under the "Members" menu (look for "New User Handouts"). Included in the list is a quick reference document for "Going Mobile," which has most of the information above, along with information on how to create an account. These handouts can be a great resource to give to your new employees, to help them get a jump start on one of the most valuable resources available to ILTA members.
