ILTA WHITE PAPER: APRIL 2014 WWW.ILTANET.ORG 21 TIME FOR A DMS HEALTH CHECK • Using a consultant ensures the health check will happen without being postponed, and that a full report and recommendations will be delivered. Someone is officially on the hook! There are also advantages to conducting a health check internally. Overall, unless administration of the system is outsourced, a consultant should not be needed to perform the health check. It is very important for the administrators to understand and remain in-tune with the information gathered. For the administrator, the exercise of collecting this data is educational and makes it come to life, creating a deeper impact and likelihood of known issues being addressed and unknown issues being prevented. Another advantage is no external cost to the firm. Finally, a health check can be an excellent training tool and its resulting report useful documentation for training new staff or conversing with upper management or colleagues on DMS-related strategy, purchasing and hiring decisions. STRONG VITAL SIGNS Performing a DMS health check will help ensure your firm's valuable assets — its documents and other records — are secure, organized and accessible.
