MEMBER RESOURCES Overheard on E-Groups ILTA is proud to offer one of the most useful — and most used — resources in legal IT for networking and learning from your peers, the ILTA E-Groups. Because hundreds of members take advantage of E-Groups every day, you can search or browse E-Groups to find discussions on a wide variety of legal IT topics. And remember, you can post any legal IT-related question. . . and we mean any question. Chances are, another ILTA member has the answer. Log on at egroups.iltanet.org. Subject: Looking for Resources for a Grammar Class I am looking for resources for a grammar class. I am supposed to either draft a class or find one we can use. Any suggestions? Craig Huggart Bradley Arant Boult Cummings LLP Trainer Birmingham, AL Number of Attorneys : 350 Number of Offices : 6 It’s a bigger challenge than showing your people where the apostrophe goes. You really need to change the way they work. So I’d give your learners some of the rules from “The Elements of Style” but really focus on why it’s important to write well if they want to make a good impression and be effective in their jobs. Show them how bad writing can be awkward, confusing, or even insulting. Scare them a little. Unfortunately, most of us think that it’s only other people who write badly. We’re all so focused on getting out quick responses to e-mail that people don’t really take the time to think about what they’re doing or how their careless mistakes reflect on them. Start by challenging them to figure out what they want to say before they start drafting, then insist that they proofread what they’ve written and get someone else to review anything that’s really important. The key is to slow down. The rules will just go in one ear and out the other without context — understanding why they’re important. I taught college writing for eight years, so I know how hard this is. Good luck! Corby Guenther ILTA Associate Participant Oakland CA 108 www.iltanet.org Peer to Peer
