For example, tools like Salesforce for businesses, Basecamp for project management and electronic medical records for doctors create virtual workspaces independent from email and result in more efficient and better quality services. In the legal profession, the most compelling new communications technologies allow law firms to do the same: pull back the curtain and invite clients to participate more directly than by just exchanging email messages. Extranet-style software that also facilitates collaboration and knowledge management is just starting to take root in law firms, but clients will expect it soon.
