39 I L T A N E T . O R G Again, a modern cloud that is underpinned by comprehensive cloud infrastructure like Microsoft Azure provides significant advantages from a geo residency perspective. If a cloud offering is only partially utilizing a service like Azure, CLDs or law firms might have their data stored in the proper geo, but when services are being performed, they might be running on servers in an entirely different and inappropriate location – which is wholly unacceptable for legal organizations who care about proper governance and compliance. Other public cloud vendors may not offer the geographic breadth that Azure does, further limiting firms' flexibility. Customers in Action A sampling of actual CLD customers reveals just how much difference a modern cloud can make for security and compliance issues: T H E C L D P E R S P E C T I V E "From a security perspective, the reality is that security in the cloud is more than our security can ever be in our on-premises environment. The cost of ensuring that level of security is simply prohibitive." - Simon Brown, IT Partner, MHA Tait Walker. "Beyond the productivity and collaboration gains we expect, a secure platform like iManage Cloud ensures all of our confidential documents are properly looked after – allowing us to confidently address regulations like GDPR." - Daniel Denton, IT Director, Menzies. No Weak Links It's important to remember that the legal ecosystem is very much a connected one. CLDs don't operate in a vacuum – they are typically working hand-in-hand with the law firms that they have retained. This means that it's not enough for a CLD to make sure they're running on a modern cloud that addresses their top compliance and data security challenges: They'll also want to make sure they're doing business with law firms who are running on a modern cloud that offers the same level of protection. As the saying goes, you're only as strong as your weakest link. By choosing a truly modern cloud, law firms and CLDs can ensure they are successfully positioned to manage today's compliance and data security challenges from a position of strength and confidence. ILTA Mark Richman, Principal Product Manager, Cloud Platform at iManage, with over 20 years of product management experience, has an established track record of building and launching SaaS based cloud solutions. In addition to his 10 years with iManage, Mark spent several years growing and scaling three different technology startups in the B2B and B2B2C spaces.
