KMStandards, formerly known as KIIAC, has
garnered a lot of attention within the legal industry
— from law firms, corporations and the Association
of Corporate Counsel. The premise of the tool
seems to have come out of the most recent "Star
Trek" film. The application enables easier creation
of precedent documents by ingesting sample
work product and then highlighting trends in
construction and helping the operator pinpoint
standard language in a given clause. From this
analysis, a new document that best represents
the structure and typical language of a particular
document can be built … and built quickly. In
essence: large sample of documents + analysis
engine = "voila!" a new best practice document.
However, the formula is never that straightforward,
as we have found during our efforts to be
opportunistic and innovative in the use of the
KMStandards tool.
FIRST STEPS
Over the last eight years or so, our firm has worked
to take elements of Six Sigma and Lean and
combine them to fit within the legal landscape. This
hasn't been an easy journey, but we've benefited
