This should allow you to prioritize which to focus on first. Below are three example projects, ranging from low to medium to high complexity. EX AM PLE 1: AU G M E NTI N G CU RRE NT WO RKF LOW Projects in this category are focused on improving current workflows by augmenting them. Frequently, the impact is efficiency gains by modernizing the current way of work. A content library is a good example of aiming to reduce/remove information silos and inefficiencies across the firm. This is at the heart of what KM is all about - the capture, distribution, and effective use of expert knowledge. The challenge is how to capture and transfer that knowledge across internal and external teams who need to work together on critical, high-stakes projects. What you should aim to accomplish is a library that is easy to access from where users spend most of their time, that is easy to create & update, and the information is captured in a contextually relevant manner. Being contextually relevant means that even in the absence of having access to the document, one can capture the context of the knowledge stored. Each content block should have the same impact for an individual as the entire library does for the organization. Having this in place allows one to start forming relationships between content, matters, and people, and enables faster (and better) decision making, reduces redundant effort, allows the business to take advantage of existing experience, enables the firm to leverage its size and reach (in case of national or global firms). EX AM PLE 2: TR ANS FO RM I N G TH E WO RKF LOW E NTI RE LY Here instead of augmenting, the focus is on disrupting or transforming an existing workflow altogether. This will require more lift as there is a significant change management element in play and the need to demonstrate the value of the disruptive way of working. An example could be any process optimization project or leveraging data analytics to add dimension to the existing project. (Think transaction management or litigation analytics). The additional layer of a challenge here comes from truly understanding the problem to be solved and creating the links between data, technology, and knowledge. EX AM PLE 3: PRO D U C TI Z I N G TH E O F F E R I N G The most complex projects will require a lot more work but should provide a sizable impact on the business. One such example is the productization of legal service. "Each content block should have the same impact for an individual as the entire library does for the organization."
