For the first time in my decades in legal technology, companies were actively promoting their use of artificial intelligence. What was especially interesting, however, was that these companies were promoting the fact that their tools were powered by AI, but they were not even bothering to say what they actually do. Soon after, I spoke on a panel with Suresh Pillai, senior corporate counsel at Astellas Pharma. Suresh said it best: "Everyone wants to get into AI, but no one knows what it can do." In an effort to fix that, in 2019, I launched the Legal AI Efficacy Report, which analyzes 61 different AI-powered legal technologies. Around the same time, ILTA was looking to take a deep dive into the artificial intelligence/machine learning landscape in the legal industry through the eyes of ILTA members, business partners and others in the legal ecosystem. ILTA's annual Artificial Intelligence & Machine Learning Survey addresses where organizations are on their AI journey, what categories of software they deem most important, what risks they foresee, and much more. Neither survey, however, answers the key question people in the legal community keep asking: How many are using each tool? And with that, the ILTA-Blickstein Group Legal AI Tool Usage Survey was born. The methodology was simple. We created a list of 99 AI- powered tools, split it up by category (the same 8 categories that we use in the Legal AI Efficacy Report) and asked 143 ILTA members to simply (1) mark the tools with which they have experience and (2) tell us how much experience, on a scale of one to five. A score of 1 represented "just a proof of concept," while a 5 meant "integral to our daily operations." The survey was in the field from February 13, 2020 to March 31, 2020. Not surprisingly, we got more overall responses in the E-Discovery & Document Review and Contract Management—Pre-Execution categories than any other. Somewhat surprisingly, we got the fewest responses in the Billing & Spend Management category, indicating that there is a lot of potential for tools that make billing more efficient and/or help manage legal spend more effectively.
