You have a professional interest in Open Source
technology; what, in your opinion, is the next big
advancement?
A couple things that I think are interesting:
» Cryptocurrency based on Open Source technology
is cuing edge. I don't know if much will come
from Open Source efforts, that whole world is still
nebulous.
» I think what Open Source provides is a variety of
new ideas. People want to work with new technology,
and the best way to do this is to use Open Source
technology, collaboratively. Open Source: "Standing
on the shoulders of giants".
» I see this in security all the time: people use regular
commodity tools and when they can't extend them
to do what they want, they'll find something already
wrien that meets their needs, and this will then
cycle back into commodity products. I think that's
the real value in Open Source.
How do you leverage your CIO experience to meet
everyday lawyer and legal needs?
Online, I have a close-knit group of friends who use Open
Source tools to keep up with the changes we're seeing in
technology.
This is how ILTA comes into play for me: via
discussions with my peers; this how we learn from each
other.
You have attended ILTACON every year since 2005:
Do you think it's helped your professional career?
Absolutely. The ability to learn and then bring solutions
to my organization that they couldn't otherwise afford, or
support, gives me the tools to support and lead my team.
What do you do for fun?
I'm an avid reader and am heavily involved in two types of
martial arts; both of my sons have participated as well. I
love camping, hiking, canoeing. P2P
